| Trend Alert: Satin Fabrics |
 |
| Satin is an excellent luxurious fabric, perfect for ties and scarves like these available from KTP Design Company (asi/63773). |
A major emerging theme of recent fashion forecasts is the emphasis on "sophisticated chic" and "low-profile luxury" – in essence, fabrics that aren’t over-the-top gaudy but still radiate sophistication and class. As a result, satin has soared in popularity for this year and beyond.
"Satin is a good fabric choice for garments and accessories such as ties and scarves because it gives off an expensive look," says Patrick Walsh, president of KTP Design Company (asi/63773). "It has an extremely soft hand and it drapes very nicely – an advantage when designers want to make a loose-fitting garment with flowing lines."
Satin is a glossy, smooth-surfaced fabric that is usually made with silk or rayon fibers. Its luxorious, high-end appeal makes satin a fabric favorite for fashion-related fields such as bridal wear outlets.
However, Walsh thinks the fabric is overlooked is because it’s not the first thing that comes to mind for logoed apparel and decoration. "In [our] business, the number one thing a customer looks for is how a tie will look with his company logo," Walsh says. "Then they’ll inquire the make of the fabric such as cotton, polyester or silk. The type of weave (such as satin, twill or jacquard) may not even cross their mind. But business owners should still keep satin in their inventory and find ways to let their clients know the benefits of having satin represented in their orders."
Be sure to keep an open mind with satin as a unique layering piece with a more traditional, rugged fabric. Combining it with ripped denim, for example, provides a singular clash of textures and styles that encapsulates both high society and comfortable living.

Sales Challenge: Spa Amenities
|
 |
| This pair of waffle weave slippers (SPWS) with Velcro closure is made of 80% cotton/20% polyester and features skid resistance with TPR sole. Available from Pro Towels (asi/79750). |
Living the relaxed lifestyle doesn’t necessarily qualify you to sell spa products – knowledge of the basics are needed to keep the success of your business booming. And nothing is more basic than pitching the concept of value with luxury products like a robe or a pair of slippers. Stephanie McClintock, director of marketing for Pro Towels (asi/79750), explains that higher-end goods like those provide more punch because end-users will hold onto them. "When pitching luxury goods," she says, "we let our clients know that there’s no better way for others to see their company logo than on a 25x50 inch towel. It’s more visible than putting your company logo on a pen or mouse pad."
McClintock also says towels make great promotional items because you don’t have to worry about sizing your customers. "One size usually fits all," she says. "And it’s one product that’s here to stay. When’s the last time you heard of someone throwing away a towel? They’re constantly reused."
However, some end-users may fail to notice spa products because the way they are categorized. "Towels, slippers, robes and other spa pieces fall into the apparel category and many end-users may think they are overly priced," says McClintock. "There are plenty of suppliers, us included, that work with a customer’s budget to make sure there’s some sort of business to be made. We’ll continue to make sure of that."

The Dos and Don'ts of Selling Plus Sizes
|
|
According to the apparel experts, the key to selling plus-size apparel lies in fit. Even if products are tested on fit models and sized as accurately as possible, the reality is, when anybody walks into a retail store, he or she has to try on different cuts and styles, because some styles just don’t fit as well as others. Here are four Dos and Don’ts when it comes to plus-sized apparel:
1. DO ensure that styles are long enough to skim just below the hip and have a finished hem so they can be worn tucked or untucked.
2. DON’T use terms like "overweight," "obese" or "big" to describe clients or anybody who may be wearing the apparel you provide. Though these words might seem harmless and commonly used descriptors, they can hurt. Focus on the terminology "extended sizes."
3. DO study suppliers’ charts and understand the tendencies in fit for the suppliers you work with. Compare suppliers’ measurements to one another to get a better grasp of sizing.
4. DON’T insinuate or directly say that a person needs a larger size. If you are afraid a person has the wrong size, gently reinforce the need for measurements, explaining that these items are not always sized like retail garments.
